The new year always brings new ideas and that is especially true in home design trends. For the coming year we are seeing a return to earthiness – wood furniture in natural tones, outdoor color hues and earthy looks. Whoever thought those odd colors of the 70’s and 80’s would not return is wrong. They are back as accents including bright mauve, pea green and royal blue. Texture will be a large part of the scene, particularly in upholstery. Warm and fuzzy is in style. Here are some trends worth following:
Texture
Welcome the return of chenille, shag and velvet. This boucle covered sofa highlights several trends – minimalism, curved lines, neutral tones and fuzzy fabric. It also comes in gray, black and green. Shag covered benches work well at the foot of a bed or as a dressing table seat in the bathroom.
Here is a beautiful blue sofa covered in a plush fabric with fuzzy pillows. Natural sheepskin is featured on this luxury sofa set. Imagine sitting on these comfy pieces.
Color
We see a renewed interest in color – bold and bright is taking the place of neutrals. Gray is definitely down being replaced by warmer natural colors. Even wall paper is making a return with designers using wild colors to add pop and personality or to bring the outdoors in with earth-toned greens and browns. Here are two examples of effectively mixing color, texture and pattern.
These wallpapered rooms show a splash of color in either the furniture or the walls.
And don’t forget area rugs as a way to brighten up your space. Thousands of gorgeous choices are available in many sizes and many price points. Even an inexperienced homeowner can create a gorgeous room with a bold rug under neutral furniture. Just pick out some colors from the rug to add accessories like throw pillows and wall art.
Curves
Soft curves and rounded edges are what it’s all about – especially in upholstered furniture. Whether you want a contemporary look or traditional, this trend can benefit. This lovely sectional features many of the trends mentioned – color, texture and soft lines. It comes off with a more traditional look vs. the very modern flair of the “lips” sofas which come in many colors.
Super curvy lines like this boucle sofa also offer super comfy seating. And rounded corners on this small sofa set help make a small space look bigger. Many velvets today are “performance” fabrics which wear and clean easily.
